Tarot or Runes: Which Should You Choose for Your Question?

tarot-o-runas

Since I started offering rune readings, one question has come up again and again: “Which is better for me, Tarot or runes?” Both can help you find clarity, but they speak different symbolic languages and answer in different ways. Choosing the one that fits your question can make the reading much more useful.

The point isn't that one is better than the other. It's finding which one suits what you want to ask. Here I'll explain what they have in common, how they differ, and which kinds of questions each answers best, with concrete examples to help you decide with more confidence.

What Tarot and runes have in common

Tarot and runes are both oracular tools: systems of symbols that offer insight into a particular situation through a spread or casting. In neither case does a reading reveal a destiny set in stone. It offers a view of what is happening now and the possibilities that may grow from it.

They also share something essential to the way I work: open-ended questions bring out the best in them. Neither cards nor runes are meant to give only a yes or no. Both have more to offer when you ask what you need to know, what is influencing a situation, or what you can do about what you're going through.

Finally, neither Tarot nor runes make decisions for you. They give you a clearer picture so you can choose more consciously, but the decision is always yours. For me, that is the foundation of a good reading.

How Tarot and runes differ

The differences become clear when you look at how each tool is made and the kind of message it conveys. These are the three I notice most in a reading:

Images or symbols

Tarot has 78 cards, each with an image full of detail: people, colors, scenes, and objects. Runes, by contrast, are 24 simple symbols, letters from an ancient Norse alphabet. That difference in form shapes the answer. Tarot has more elements with which to describe a situation, while runes distill the message into a few signs.

Broad or focused answers

Runes tend to be more direct. They show what is happening, what is holding a situation back, and what the next step might be, without many detours. Tarot tends to unfold a broader picture, with different layers of the same situation. Neither approach is better; it depends on whether you need precise guidance or a fuller view.

Practical and emotional perspectives

Because its images are so rich, Tarot allows us to go deeper into emotional aspects: what you feel, what you struggle with, and how you relate to other people. Runes focus more on the practical side, on action and what is in your hands. That is why I often suggest Tarot when a question carries a great deal of emotion.

When to choose a rune reading

Runes are ideal when you have a specific situation and need clarity to move forward. I especially recommend them in these cases:

  • A specific decision: when you face two paths and need to know what to consider before choosing.
  • A project that isn't moving forward: when you want to understand what is holding it back and what you can do to get it unstuck.
  • The start of a new chapter: a new job, a move, a long journey, or any beginning where you want to know what to keep in mind.
  • A time when you feel stuck: when you feel unable to move and need to identify your next step.
  • Practical questions about money or work: topics where a clear answer you can put into practice helps more than a lengthy analysis.

When to choose a Tarot reading

Tarot is especially helpful when you need to understand a situation in depth, including what you feel and what is happening in your relationships. These are the situations in which I recommend it most often:

  • Romantic, family, or friendship relationships: Tarot lets you look at the dynamics of a relationship and your place within it.
  • Emotionally intense times: a separation, a loss, or a period of deep inner confusion.
  • Situations with many moving parts: when several people are involved or different aspects overlap.
  • Personal processes: when you want to understand what a recurring experience is showing you or which part of yourself needs attention.
  • Decisions that cause you a lot of anxiety: when, besides knowing what to do, you need to understand why deciding feels so difficult.

The same question, two different tools

To make the difference clearer, let's take an example. Imagine you're considering changing jobs and can't quite decide. You have a new offer, but you also have many doubts about what leaving your current job would mean.

If you bring that question to the runes, the reading will most likely focus on what is influencing your decision, what obstacle is appearing, and what step might serve you best. It is an answer that helps you sort things out and move, without dwelling too much on how you feel about the change.

If you bring the same question to Tarot, the reading may also show you the emotional side: the fear of leaving the familiar, what ties you to your current job, and your relationships with coworkers or the person in charge. It offers a broader view, one that includes feelings and relationships.

Both readings have value. The key is what you need right now. If you already understand how you feel and want to know how to move ahead, runes are often the better fit. If you're still trying to understand what this change brings up for you, Tarot may offer more.

Can you combine Tarot and runes?

Yes, and sometimes it is a very good idea. Some people have a Tarot reading first to understand a situation in depth, then consult the runes to clarify practical steps. One tool complements the other without contradicting it.

What I don't recommend is asking exactly the same question of both tools in the hope that one will contradict the other or confirm what you want to hear. If you combine them, use different questions, each suited to what that tool does best.

And if you are looking beyond a particular situation, if you want to understand patterns that recur in your life or the deeper meaning of what you are going through, another tool may be a better fit: the Akashic Records. Each tool has its moment, and choosing well is part of the process.

If you still aren't sure which to choose

It's completely normal to have doubts. Many people write to me with a situation in mind but no idea which tool would suit them. In those cases, just tell me what you'd like to ask and we can work it out together, with no obligation.
