What to Ask the Runes: 20 Questions for Your Next Reading

preguntas-para-las-runas

In Norse mythology, Odin hung for nine nights from Yggdrasil, the great tree that connected the worlds, until the runes revealed themselves to him. That was the price he paid to reach their wisdom. Today, thankfully, consulting them doesn't ask for anything like that sacrifice. But it is worth taking a moment to think about what you want to ask before you sit down for a reading.

If you're thinking about consulting the runes, you may already have a topic in mind but not quite know how to phrase your question. Or maybe you're simply looking for ideas to get started. In this article you'll find 20 examples of rune reading questions, along with a few tips for adapting them to your own situation and getting the most out of your reading.

From a worry to a clear question

The first step is to identify what you want to ask about. It could be a decision at work, a relationship going through a rough patch, or a project you've been stuck on for a while. You don't need to arrive with a question already prepared. It's enough to recognize which situation you'd like to explore through the runes.

Once you're clear on the topic, the next thing is to think about what you'd like to know about it. If you're considering leaving your job, for example, you might want to weigh the risks of quitting, understand why you no longer feel comfortable, or explore what other options you have. These are concerns that start from the same situation but can lead to very different readings.

The last step is turning that concern into a clear question. To do that, it helps to choose your angle well, because the way you frame your question shapes the kind of answer you can get. There are a few simple tips that can help you with this.

How to ask the runes good questions

When it comes to framing your question, I'd suggest keeping three things in mind that, from my experience giving readings, help you get clearer and more useful answers.

Keep it open

Yes-or-no questions force the answer down to two options, when the runes have so much more to show. It works far better to start with "what" or "how." Instead of "should I accept this job?", you can ask "what do I need to know before accepting this job?", and the answer may include things you hadn't even considered.

Give it a single focus

The more specific the situation, the more precise the reading. Asking "what's going on with my work life?" is not the same as asking "what do I need to know about the offer I got this week?". And if several things are weighing on you at once, it's best to separate them into different questions, one for each topic.

Let it look at your present and what you can do

The runes don't announce a fixed destiny: they show what's influencing a situation today and where the path you're on could take you. That's why it's better to ask what you can do rather than what will happen. "Will I pass the exam?" leaves you waiting; "what do I need to keep in mind to prepare for this exam?" gives you something to work with — what you can do.

20 questions to ask the runes

Now that you know what to keep in mind when framing your question, here are 20 examples of rune reading questions, organized by topic. You can use them just as they are or adapt them to your situation. What matters is that each question answers what you really want to know.

On work and money

  • What do I need to know about the job offer I received?
  • What's holding back the progress of my project?
  • What can I do to improve my financial situation?
  • What should I keep in mind before starting my own business?
  • How can I resolve the conflict I have with a coworker?

On love and relationships

  • What do I need to understand about the moment my relationship is going through?
  • What can I do to improve communication with (person's name)?
  • What do I need to know about the relationship I'm beginning?
  • How can I bring peace to a relationship that has already ended?
  • What's keeping me from opening up to a new relationship?

On decisions and changes

  • What should I keep in mind before making this decision?
  • What do I need to know to choose between (option A) and (option B)?
  • What should I keep in mind before moving?
  • What do I need to know before setting out on this trip?
  • What would it help me to leave behind as I start this new chapter?

On your personal growth

  • What habit or attitude is keeping me from moving forward?
  • What do I need to learn from this situation that keeps repeating?
  • Which area of my life do I need to pay more attention to right now?
  • What do I need in order to trust my own decisions more?
  • What's the next step it would be good for me to take?

How to turn a question that doesn't work into one that does

Very often, the question we have in our head isn't the one that works best in a reading. The good news is that it can almost always be reframed without losing what you really want to know. Here are some examples of how I work on it with the people who come to me:

  • "Am I going to get the job?": better to ask "What do I need to keep in mind during this hiring process?".
  • "Is he going to come back?": better to ask "What do I need to understand about this breakup?".
  • "Should I quit?": better to ask "What do I need to know before deciding whether to leave my job?".
  • "What's going to happen with my life?": better to ask "Which area of my life needs more attention right now?".
  • "Why does everything go wrong for me?": better to ask "What's blocking my progress, and what can I do about it?".

As you can see, the underlying intention is the same in every case. What changes is the angle: the question stops waiting for a verdict and starts looking for understanding, and that gives the reading so much more to show you.

What it's best not to ask the runes

There are some questions the runes aren't the right tool for. Knowing them before your reading helps you make the most of each consultation:

  • Exact dates: the runes can show whether a situation calls for patience or movement, but they won't tell you the day or the month something will happen.
  • Health matters: if you have a medical concern, the right thing is to see a professional. A reading is no substitute for a diagnosis.
  • What another person thinks or feels: you can ask about your bond with someone and about what you can do from where you stand, but not about that person's inner world.
  • The same question again and again: if a question already got its answer, asking it again won't change the message. If you didn't like an answer, it's worth asking yourself what it's showing you.

How many questions to ask in a rune reading

It depends on what you're going through. If you have a single situation in mind, one good question can be enough to find clarity. If you want to look at a topic from different angles, or ask about several areas of your life, it's worth asking a few more.

What matters is that each question has its own space. Each one gets its own spread, and the message becomes much clearer when the spread answers a single topic than when it tries to cover several at once.

How to prepare for your rune reading

Before your consultation, take a while to think about what you want to ask. Write down the situation just as you're living it, without worrying yet about how to phrase it. Often, putting it into words already brings more clarity about what it is you need to understand.

It also helps to add a bit of context. You don't need to tell your whole story, but knowing whether the question has to do with a new job, a relationship that ended, or a decision you have to make in the coming days makes it possible to bring the runes' message down to your concrete reality — adding a bit of context.

In my readings you can choose how many questions to ask, and if you're not sure how to phrase them, we can shape them together before we begin. If you feel it's a good moment to consult the runes about something you're living through, you can learn more about my rune readings, where I explain how I work and what you'll receive.
