How to Access Your Akashic Records Step by Step

One of the most widespread beliefs about the Akashic Records is that only a select few can access them. That one must have a special gift, an extraordinary sensitivity, or have been born with a certain psychic ability. And it is very important to make this clear from the outset: that is not the case. Anyone, with practice and the right method, can learn to open their own Akashic Records.
I am a prime example of this. Before I started working with the Akashic Records, it would never have occurred to me that it was something I could do. I saw it as a practice reserved for people far more spiritual than I was—people with years of meditation experience or gifts that I didn’t possess. However, that wasn’t the case. It’s an ability we all have, and it can be developed.
In this article, I’m going to explain step by step how to access your own Akashic Records, based on the method taught by Linda Howe in her book How to Read the Akashic Records —one of the most well-known and respected approaches worldwide—which has the advantage of being available in a book accessible to anyone who wants to learn.
The Book I Recommend: How to Read the Akashic Records
Before we get into the method, I’d like to recommend the book I’ll be using as the basis for this article: How to Read the Akashic Records by Linda Howe. It’s a clear, accessible, and very well-structured book that takes you step by step from theory to the practical application of opening your own Akashic Records.
Linda Howe is one of the world's leading authorities on working with the Akashic Records. Her method, known as the Pathway Prayer Process, is one of the most widely used and respected, precisely because it is accessible to people with no prior spiritual training.
If you’re planning to start this practice, I recommend that you read the entire book first, without skipping any chapters. What I’m going to share with you in this article is a summary of his method, but the book contains many more details and nuances that will be very useful to you.
Preparing Before Opening Your Records
Preparation is a fundamental part of the process, and it is often underestimated. It’s not about performing complex rituals, but rather about creating the right internal and external conditions so that the connection with the Records can take place clearly.
First, choose a quiet place where no one will interrupt you. Turn off your cell phone, close the door, and make sure you have some time to spare. The practice doesn’t take much time (fifteen to twenty minutes is enough to start with), but it does require that you be fully present in what you’re about to do.
There are also some specific guidelines that Linda Howe suggests following before opening the Records: avoid alcohol and drugs for 24 hours beforehand, as they affect your energy field and distort your perception. And always, before you begin, do a brief meditation to center yourself. Howe teaches a practice called the Pillar of Light Meditation, which helps anchor you energetically and prepare you for the connection.
The Prayer to Open Your Records
At the heart of Linda Howe’s method is what she calls the Path Prayer, a specific prayer that acts as an energetic bridge between your ordinary consciousness and the Akashic Records. This prayer is not arbitrary: each word carries a vibrational weight that brings about the shift in state necessary to access the Records.
The prayer consists of a part that is spoken aloud and another part that is said silently, and it includes your full legal name (the one listed on your documents). Your full name is important because every name has a unique energetic vibration, and it is that vibration that allows you to access your own Records specifically.
At the end of the prayer, a key phrase is spoken aloud: "The Records are now open." At that moment, the shift in consciousness is complete, and you are ready to begin receiving information. There are no strange phenomena, no odd voices, and nothing dramatic. You are still yourself, speaking just as you always do. The only thing that changes is the source from which the information you are about to receive comes.
The Prayer to Close Your Records
Just as there is an opening prayer, there is also a closing prayer. This part is just as important as the opening, and should never be skipped. Closing the Registers properly allows you to return to your ordinary state of consciousness in an orderly and complete manner.
The closing prayer includes a thank you to the Masters, Teachers, and Beloved Ones who accompanied the reading, and ends with the phrase "The Records are now closed", which is repeated three times. This repetition is not merely decorative: it marks the beginning, the middle, and the end of the shift in consciousness that brings you back to the physical plane.
After closing the Chakras, it’s important to do something that helps ground you: drink a glass of water, go for a walk, eat something, or wash your face. Any simple action that brings you back to the present moment and into your body. This prevents you from feeling like you’re “floating” or disoriented after the practice.
The Importance of Writing While Reading
Once the Channels are open, information begins to flow in. It may come in the form of words, images, physical sensations, or ideas that appear with clarity. And this is where a fundamental tool comes into play: writing.
I highly recommend writing down everything you receive during the reading. You don’t have to wait until it’s over to take notes: you can start writing as the information comes in. This practice has two major benefits. For one thing, it allows you to record what comes through without losing any details, because the rational mind tends to quickly forget what comes from other dimensions. On the other hand, writing while you channel helps you avoid interfering with the content: the words flow through you onto the paper, without your mind editing them.
This method of channeling is known as automatic writing, and it is the primary tool I use in my readings. Over time, you will notice that the information flows more and more freely, and that writing becomes a natural process that accompanies the opening of the channel.
Perseverance as the Key to the Process
There’s something I learned along the way that I’d like to share with you: working with the Akashic Records doesn’t happen overnight. At first, you’ll have doubts. You’ll wonder if what you’re receiving is real or if you’re just making it up. It’s normal, and it happens to everyone.
The only way to build confidence in the channel is to practice regularly. Linda Howe makes this clear in her book: the difference between those who can access the Records clearly and those who cannot lies in consistency. A little bit every day creates a much stronger connection than one long session once a month.
My recommendation, based on my own experience, is that you open the Channels every day for the first few months, even if it’s just for fifteen minutes. Ask a simple question, write down whatever comes to mind, and close the session. It is this quiet, consistent practice that will open the channel for you over time, and that will allow you to trust what you receive.
What Kinds of Questions Work Best?
Once you’ve opened the Records, you’ll be able to ask questions. And the quality of the question has a huge impact on the quality of the answer. The questions that work best are open-ended ones, starting with “what,” “how,” or “why.” For example, instead of asking, “Will I find a partner?” it’s more helpful to ask, “What do I need to understand or heal in order to open myself up to a new relationship?”
The Records do not provide exact dates or predictions. They are not designed for that. Their purpose is to give you information that helps you understand, heal, and move forward, always respecting your free will. If you ask closed-ended or predictive questions, you will receive vague or ambiguous answers. On the other hand, if you ask questions that encourage reflection and learning, the answers will be rich and insightful.
Another important point: the Records do not disclose information about third parties without their consent. You can ask about your connection to someone—specifically, what you need to understand about that relationship—but not about what that other person thinks or feels. That information belongs to their own Records, and the guides always respect that boundary.
If You'd Like to Have a Reading With Me
Learning to open your own Records is a transformative experience, and I encourage you to give it a try if you feel the call. But it’s also perfectly fine—especially at first—to receive readings from someone else who has already developed their channel, so you can experience it from the client’s perspective and start getting familiar with the language of the Records.
During my readings, I channel information through automatic writing, which allows me to provide you with a written report containing everything that comes through during the session. Many people combine their readings with me with their own personal practice, and this combination is often very enriching.
If you feel that now is the right time to try this experience, you can learn more about my Akashic Record readings, where I explain in detail how I work and what you can expect from a session.
