Prenatal Planning: Why Did You Choose to Face Certain Challenges?

There’s one question that comes up time and again in my Akashic Records readings: “Why me?” Why did I have that family? Why did I go through that illness? Why did I have those connections? Why am I going through this that seems to make no sense? And although every story is unique, the answer that emerges from the Records usually points to the same thing: nothing you’re experiencing is a coincidence.
This is known as prenatal planning, and it is one of the most eye-opening concepts I’ve discovered since I began working with the Akashic Records. This perspective holds that, before incarnating in this life, your soul chose certain scenarios, certain people, and certain challenges in order to experience specific lessons. I’m going to tell you what this is all about, why your soul chose what it chose, and how you can access that information.
What Is Prenatal Planning?
Prenatal planning is the idea that, before you were born, your soul devised a plan for this life. It wasn’t a rigid or set-in-stone plan, but rather a roadmap with certain key points: lessons you wanted to learn, connections you needed to reconnect with, and challenges you chose to face in order to grow spiritually.
That planning took place on another level of consciousness, before your soul entered this body and forgot most of that information. Because that forgetting is also part of the plan: if we remembered everything, we wouldn’t be able to live through the experiences with the intensity needed for the lessons to take root.
The important thing to understand is that this planning does not take away your free will. Your soul chose the major themes, the meaningful experiences, and the souls you would encounter. But how you respond to each situation, the decisions you make, and how you choose to grow through each experience—that remains entirely up to you.
Why Your Soul Chose Certain Challenges
One of the most frequently asked questions when discussing this topic is: "Why would I choose something so painful?" And the answer, though it can sometimes be hard to accept, makes perfect sense when viewed from the perspective of the soul rather than that of the human ego.
Your soul does not seek to avoid pain; it seeks to evolve. And major shifts in consciousness often occur through intense experiences, because they are what force you to break down structures, let go of the familiar, and develop qualities that would never emerge in a comfortable life. From this perspective, pain is not a punishment; it is a teacher.
There are lessons that can only be learned through certain experiences. Compassion cannot be developed without having suffered. Strength cannot emerge without having been tested. The ability to let go cannot be learned without having lost something important. That is why your soul chose a path with specific challenges: because it knew that those experiences were the ones that would help it grow the most.
Agreements With Other Souls
Another key aspect of prenatal planning is the agreements your soul made with other souls before incarnating. Those agreements determined who would be your father, your mother, your siblings, your partners, your children, your closest friends, and also the people who would hurt you the most.
The people who came into your life to challenge you were also part of the plan. Because sometimes the most loving souls choose, out of love for you, to incarnate as those who will bring you the most intense lessons. That mother who didn’t know how to love you the way you needed, that partner who broke your heart, that figure who appeared as an obstacle: on a soul level, they all fulfilled a role that you agreed upon before coming here.
This doesn’t mean you should excuse the hurt or stay in relationships that are harmful. It means that, from a broader perspective, every meaningful connection served a purpose. Understanding that purpose can help you heal old wounds, let go of resentment, and incorporate the lessons that relationship was meant to teach you.
Challenges as Learning Opportunities
When we begin to view life from this perspective, challenges cease to be injustices and become something else entirely: opportunities for growth. Every difficult situation you’re going through brings with it a specific lesson—something your soul wanted to develop or heal in this lifetime.
Sometimes learning means developing a talent. Other times it means healing a wound you’ve carried over from past lives. Other times it means breaking a family pattern that’s been passed down for generations. And often it’s something even more subtle: learning to trust, to let go of control, to love yourself, to set boundaries, and to open yourself up to love.
It’s not always possible to recognize what you’re learning right in the moment. Sometimes you only see it later, when you look back and realize that what seemed like the worst moment of your life was actually what led you to become the person you are today.
How to Access Your Prenatal Care Information
There is a very specific way to access this information: by reading the Akashic Records. The Records contain all the information about your soul, including the plan you designed before incarnating, the agreements you made with other souls, and the lessons you came to learn in this life.
It’s important to note that the Records don’t reveal all of this information—not at any given time. What comes through in a reading is what’s relevant to you at this stage of your life. There are aspects of your prenatal planning that may not appear because it’s not yet time for you to know them, or because knowing them wouldn’t contribute anything useful to your current journey. The guides and teachers who accompany each reading provide exactly the information your soul needs to integrate right now.
When that information comes, it usually has a deeply healing effect. Not because it eliminates the pain, but because it gives it meaning. When you understand that what you’re going through isn’t a mistake or an injustice, but part of a larger plan, something clicks inside. You begin to see the possibility of navigating the process with greater awareness, acceptance, and confidence.
A Book I Recommend on the Subject
If this topic resonates with you and you’d like to explore it further, there’s a book I highly recommend: The Soul’s Plan by Robert Schwartz. It’s a beautiful book that uses channeled messages to explore how different people planned their challenges before birth and what lessons they came to integrate.
Schwartz examines very specific cases: people who have experienced illness, loss, accidents, and difficult relationships. In each case, the purpose that soul had chosen is revealed, along with how that experience—no matter how painful—was part of a larger plan. This book helps readers understand prenatal planning through real-life, deeply human examples.
What to Do With This Information
Understanding certain aspects of your prenatal planning isn’t just a fun fact or something to collect. It’s a tool to help you live a more meaningful life. When you know what you came here to learn, you stop struggling with your path and start walking it in a different way.
This doesn’t mean resigning yourself to or passively accepting everything that happens. On the contrary: it means taking action from a more mindful place. It means understanding that a difficult relationship has something to teach you, and from there deciding whether to stay and learn, or to walk away having processed what you needed to process. It means understanding that an illness carries a message, and from there taking even better care of yourself.
Prenatal planning doesn't take away your freedom—it gives it back to you. Because when you understand the meaning of your journey, you make clearer choices and move forward with greater purpose. You stop feeling like a victim of circumstances and start feeling like the protagonist of a process that your own soul designed.
