Does Sending Reiki From a Distance Really Work?

When I mention that I offer remote Reiki sessions, people often ask me how the energy can reach the person if I’m not in the same room with them. And I think that’s a perfectly valid question, because I asked myself the same thing the first time I heard about this practice.

After years of practice, I can confidently tell you that yes, sending energy from a distance is real and just as effective as an in-person session. I’m going to explain how it works, why it’s possible, what role Reiki symbols play, and what you can expect if you decide to try this experience.

What Is Energy, and Why Can It Travel?

Everything that exists, including us, is composed of energy at different levels of vibration. Our physical body is one of those layers—the densest, but not the only one.

Surrounding that physical body, we also have an energetic body, with centers called chakras that regulate the flow of vitality in our lives. When that energy becomes blocked or unbalanced, physical, emotional, or mental tension arises.

The interesting thing is that energy doesn't behave like matter. It isn't limited by walls, or by distance, or by time. It can travel, it can connect with other people, and it can be directed wherever you intend it to go with intention and presence.

This is the principle underlying all forms of remote energy healing. It is neither a modern invention nor a passing fad: spiritual traditions around the world have recognized it for thousands of years.

Reiki as a Channel for That Energy

Reiki is an energy healing technique of Japanese origin, developed by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. The word "Reiki" simply means "universal life energy": that force present in all living things that we can channel to promote harmony.

Those of us who practice Reiki are not the source of that energy. We are channels. Through a process of training and specific initiations, we develop the ability to connect with that energy and direct it toward another person, an animal, a space, or a situation.

The important thing to understand is this: the therapist does not give their own energy. If that were the case, every session would leave us exhausted. What we do is allow the energy to flow through us and reach the person who needs it, always in the way that is most appropriate for that person at that moment.

Is It Really Possible to Transmit Energy Over Long Distances?

Yes, it is possible, and the key to understanding this lies in remembering that energy is not governed by the laws of time and space in the same way that matter is. Thinking about it from the perspective of traditional physics leads to confusion. But if we look at it from a broader perspective, where everything is connected on an energetic level, then sending Reiki to another city, another country, or even to a moment in the past or future ceases to be something strange.

What matters in a remote session is not physical proximity, but rather the clarity with which energy is channeled and the openness of the recipient. When these two conditions are met, the effects are exactly the same as those of an in-person session.

In my experience working with people in different countries, the feedback I receive is virtually identical to that of those who have received Reiki in person: a sense of peace, deep relaxation, emotional relief, and mental clarity. Often, those trying it for the first time write to me, surprised by how intense the experience felt.

The Symbol for Remote Transmission

Within the Reiki tradition, there are several symbols that are taught progressively as you advance through the training levels. One of them, perhaps the best known, is the Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen, also called the distant healing symbol.

This symbol is what allows the practitioner to send energy beyond physical space and also through time. It is neither magic nor a trick: it is an energetic tool that is activated by the intention and practice of the person using it.

Thanks to this symbol, Reiki can be sent to:

  • People who are far away, in another city or country, without needing to be in the same place.
  • Past experiences that still hurt or weigh heavily on you emotionally, to help you heal from them.
  • Future events, such as a job interview, surgery, or an important trip, to help you navigate those moments with greater ease.
  • Animals and pets, which are very receptive to this energy and absorb it naturally.
  • Physical spaces such as homes or offices, to harmonize their energy and clear accumulated negative energy.

What Is the Process Like During a Remote Session?

In my sessions, the entire process begins with a very simple connection: I ask for your full name and date of birth. With that information, a clear and personalized energetic bridge is established, allowing me to tune into your energy field without us needing to be in the same place or at the same time.

Once that connection is established, I use a pendulum to assess the state of your chakras and identify any blockages or imbalances. From there, I channel energy to the centers that need it most, allowing Reiki to work wherever your energy body requires it.

At the end of the session, I prepare a personalized report in which I share my observations with you: the state of each of your chakras, the most significant energy shifts, and practical recommendations for maintaining balance in the days ahead. This way, the experience doesn’t end with the session; instead, you can continue to incorporate it into your daily life.

Why You Don't Need to Be Online

A very common question is whether you need to schedule a time for the session. The answer is no. And this is usually great news for people with busy schedules, long work hours, or who live in different time zones.

You can be doing anything at the moment I send the energy, because that transmission doesn't depend on you being in a special state or a specific position. Reiki reaches you regardless, because it works on your energy field regardless of what you're doing physically.

This doesn't mean the session loses its effectiveness. Reiki always manifests in the way that's best suited to each person. It's one of the most beautiful things about this energy: it has a mind of its own, knows what you need, and delivers it with care.

What Does It Feel Like to Receive a Distant Reiki Treatment?

Everyone experiences it differently, because every energy body is unique. But there are certain sensations that come up very often in the feedback I receive: deep relaxation, a sense of calm that hasn’t been felt in a long time, and relief in areas of the body where tension had built up.

It’s also common for emotions to surface during or after the session. Sometimes you feel like crying for no apparent reason; sometimes you feel a gentle sense of joy; sometimes you feel a kind of pleasant tiredness, as if your body has finally been able to let go of something it had been carrying. All of these responses are part of the process of releasing energy.

And there’s something many of my clients often tell me: they sleep deeply the night after a session, much more so than usual. Reiki helps the nervous system emerge from the state of alertness that daily life often leaves us in, and that’s one of the first signs that the energy has done its job.

When to Consider a Remote Reiki Session

You don’t have to be going through a crisis to receive Reiki. In fact, many of the people who write to me do so because they want to take care of themselves, give themselves a moment to pause, and work on their well-being as a preventive measure. And I think that’s beautiful, because we don’t always wait until something breaks before we take care of it.

That said, there are times when Reiki can be particularly helpful: periods of high stress, the grieving process, major decisions, life changes, sleep problems, anxiety, and prolonged emotional exhaustion. In these cases, Reiki acts as an energetic support that helps you navigate these times with greater calm and clarity.

If you feel that now is a good time to take care of your energy and give yourself some space to find balance, you can learn more about my remote Reiki sessions, where I explain in detail how I work and what you can expect from a session.
